Purchased this direct from Amazon in January , purely as a means to get the free promotional Win10 upgrade when it was released in July. I received the full retail version of Windows 8. The user interface I found to be really horrible as things were not easily accessible.
This was purely because the primary functionality of this Windows edition was geared more toward a touch-screen user, whilst the needs of desktop users was ignored 4 Star grading: The only reason I bought this product in January was to access the free promotional upgrade to Windows 10 Professional.
I assumed that the product would keep it's status as a retail license and that I would subsequently maintain full rights to transfer to any other device 3 Star grading As previously stated I expected Win8.
I was however, sadly mistaken on this point. It became apparent from reading Microsoft policy line by line , that the retail license becomes an OEM license on the 29th July and the right of transfer is lost. I complained to Microsoft Corporate HQ by email and then the issue was escalated to senior management in the USA to resolve the issue who phoned me and gave me their direct phone number and personal corporate email address.
I pointed out the policy is not consistent with EULA. That I was mislead into buying a retail edition of 8. That it could be argued Microsoft had acted in unlawfully in the way some licenses were being upgraded.
Microsoft agreed to send me a brand new and independent Full Retail Win10 Pro license for free by way of compensation. The also said the product key they gave me for Win10 is independent of my Win8. Or have the new free Win10 Pro Retail on one device, whilst having my Win8. They also said I could sell the 8. Well done to Microsoft for finding a reasonable resolution for me!
Suspicious: I ordered this product trusting that the it's legitimate due to the seller being listed as Microsoft, however upon receiving the product it has come in the form of TDK DVD-R with Windows 8. The key so far works, however if it gets bounced but I will be requesting a refund, and I will be contacting ActionFraud. Depending on what happens next, I'll be updating this review. For now all that can be confirmed is that the seller IS NOT Microsoft and do not believe any reviews claiming the seller to be Microsoft.
I have no idea why Amazon has this seller listed as Microsoft and this has to be corrected immediately. The product came as a simple disc in a plastic slip case, containing the files such as the ISO needed to install the OS. These can be downloaded from Microsoft's own website. The important part is the product key: This was on a piece of adhesive-backed paper inside the slip with the disc, and could be peeled off with the intent to be stuck to the side, back or underneath of one's computer after use.
It also included a printed set of instructions on how to install it. I believe that many people buying this in this day and age will be installing Windows 8 on top of Windows 10, so allow me to go through my experience. First, if the installer gives an error after agreeing to the EULA, paste the files from the disc onto your computer, find the installer in the Sources folder and start the process through that.
Second, you will want to do a custom install and install it to the same partition that Windows 10 itself is on which is likely to be the only partition with enough space to hold the OS anyway. This is necessary as it will not work otherwise, so back up any important files to an external drive beforehand as it will format the drive completely.
Finally, don't panic if your wireless thing only says 'no connections available' and only gives options for ethernet. W10 drivers aren't compatible with W8 ones, so you'll need to download all missing drivers other an ethernet connection likely directly into the back of your router. The safest place to do this is Intel's own site: allow it to scan your computer for missing drivers and install all updates and downloads it offers you aside from any unrelated programs you don't want to install. Once done everything will be working smoothly, but I recommend restarting just in case.
One person found this helpful. One star down for inconsistent Microsoft support. Re seller: very fast delivery, product as described. DVDs 64 and 32 bit versions and a product key in the box. The licence is transferable if you change devices. So very happy with price, product and delivery. As regarding Microsoft chat support should you need some it is total roulette.
Sometimes you get a great support, sometimes the person on the other end is plain stupid. I had to transfer 2 licences to new machines, once the support was fantastic, the other time absolutely disgraceful, it took over 6 hours and four reps to get a job done that should have taken max 1 hour. For a start my PC is massively quicker and I've managed to find some clips on the web to show how to configure Win 8.
